Earthquake Insurance
If you live in an earthquake zone, carrying some form of Earthquake Insurance is probably a good idea. You’ll find many Earthquake Insurance options depending on which company insures you. Some companies will allow you to choose what you want to be covered in your home insurance policy. You may choose to have Earthquake Insurance only your building or perhaps only to insure part of your contents. You can also look at different Earthquake Insurance deductibles. The higher your deductible, the lower your annual cost will be. Suppose you are worried that your Earthquake Insurance deductible is too high. In that case, there is sometimes an option to buy a separate policy to cover the cost of the Earthquake Insurance deductible.
Earthquake Supplies
In addition to insurance, it’s essential to be adequately prepared for yourself and your family. Experts tell us we must maintain enough supplies to last each household member for at least 72 hours after an earthquake.
It would be best if you stored it in an easily accessible dry area:
- 2 litres of water per person per day
- Canned food, non-perishable foods, granola bars (Remember also to include allergy-friendly foods if any members of your family have allergies)
- Manual can opener
- Flashlight and batteries
- Radio (wind up or with extra batteries)
- First Aid Kit
- Prescription Drugs
- Infant Formula
- Sanitary Items
- Baby Wipes
- Spare Keys for your home and car
- Cash (Including smaller bills and change)
- Your emergency plan. You can find great information on what to include in your plan and more recommended items in your Earthquake kits at https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/safety/emergency-preparedness-response-recovery/preparedbc.
Try to keep your earthquake supplies in an easily accessible area. You’ll want to be able to grab the supplies if you need them quickly. In addition, you may also want to carry an earthquake kit in your vehicle so that you are always prepared wherever you are.
